Have I Mentioned I Dislike Valentine’s Day?

I probably have. Repeatedly.

I mean, sure, in the context of everything else that’s going on in the world, this is a minor rant.

But.

There are all these people who are out there talking about how gay people existing is grooming children for sexual reasons and then we have elementary school kids doing things on this day in the full knowledge that this whole day is, in their future, expected to be het-romantic.

I mean, really. Think a bit about the effed-up culture you’re setting up here, folks.

I really wish we could go back to what the name Valentine was supposed to mean. The name “Valentine” is derived from valens, which means worthy, strong, or powerful. Can’t we reframe the holiday, and the heart iconography, to mean strength?

If not, can we at LEAST stop doing this to kids, and start making jokes about the fact that St. Valentine was martyred in 2…69?
